Insurance Requirements by Trip Type
Culture & Leisure Tours
Culture & Leisure Tours generally do not involve high altitudes or high-risk zones. Advanced adventure insurance is not required; however, your insurance policy should include:
- Medical emergencies
- Pandemic and epidemic-related coverage
- Flight cancellations
- Trip cancellations
Trekking & Walking Holidays
The difficulty level of trekking varies depending on altitude, terrain, and remoteness. Many trekking areas in Nepal and Bhutan have limited access to roads and hospitals, making emergency evacuation essential in case of illness or injury.
Your insurance must:
- Cover trekking up to the maximum altitude of your itinerary
- Include emergency search, rescue, evacuation, and medical expenses
- Include trip cancellation coverage
Please inform your insurance provider of the highest altitude of your trek. We also recommend consulting one of The Himalayan Guides’ travel consultants before purchasing your insurance policy.
Climbing & Expedition Trips
Climbing and expedition trips involve high-risk adventure activities, including technical climbing on ice and snow-covered terrain. These trips carry an increased risk of serious injury or fatality.
For all climbing and expedition trips with The Himalayan Guides:
- Advanced rescue insurance is mandatory
- Coverage must include search, rescue, evacuation, and advanced medical treatment
- Insurance premiums are typically higher and based on the maximum climbing altitude
Without the required insurance coverage, participation in climbing and expedition trips is not permitted.
Insurance Verification
All travelers must submit a copy of their travel insurance policy prior to arrival or carry it with them during the trip.
If a traveler cannot present proof of the required insurance coverage, The Himalayan Guides reserves the right to cancel the trip in the interest of the traveler’s safety.
